Appointed by Reagan as the first female Supreme Court Justice (1981–2006), Sandra Day O’Connor served as a moderate conservative swing vote. She upheld affirmative action limits, restricted abortion while preserving Roe’s core (Casey), and emphasized federalism and judicial restraint, moderating the Court’s conservative direction for decades.
